What's Included in Our France Removals Service

France remains the most popular European destination for British families moving abroad – and with good reason. But since Brexit, the paperwork has changed and the customs process is real. Secondary residence rules differ from primary moves, duty and VAT may apply in certain situations, and there are new transit restrictions that affect what you can carry. We handle the lot.

Key Information

Duty-Free Entry

Primary residence: importing personal effects to France is usually duty-free provided you’ve been domiciled outside the EU for at least one year and have owned the goods for 6+ months. Secondary/holiday residences: different rules apply, and duty plus VAT may be payable. We’ll advise based on your circumstances.

Transit Restriction

Recent legislation prohibits vehicles travelling to or through France from carrying more than a minimal amount of cigarettes or alcohol, as well as any food or plants. If found among household effects, large fines apply plus delay costs. Do not include tobacco or alcohol products in your consignment.

Vehicles

Vehicle imports are subject to compliance checks, and duty/tax will likely apply. Right-hand drive vehicles are not recommended for permanent use in France.

I'm buying a second home in France - do the same rules apply?

No. The duty-free import rules apply to people establishing their primary residence in France. If you’re furnishing a secondary or holiday home, customs duty and French VAT will apply to your goods. We’ll confirm the position based on your specific situation.

We strongly advise against it. French transit legislation now restricts alcohol and tobacco in vehicles carrying household goods. If found, the fines are significant and apply to the vehicle and all other consignments on board – not just yours.
